The long-haul flight between London and Singapore covers more than 11,000 kilometers, and the exact flight path used between the two major airports can differ for a number of different reasons. In general you can say that flight paths are chosen to be as efficient as possible, shortening both the time and distance whenever possible. With that being said, a number of outer circumstances can affect the actual flight paths. This can be everything from weather conditions to conflicts on the ground – the later usually being the one causing the biggest impact. Conflict areas around the world cause certain airspace to close, or at least to be avoided by major commercial airlines.
Another thing that can affect the flight paths chosen are which airline you fly with. For example some airlines are forced to (or choose to) avoid certain airspace, while others are allowed to pass. Nonetheless, when it comes to major conflicts the rules are normally the same for all airlines.
There are currently three operators that offer direct flights between Heathrow Airport in London and Singapore Changi Airport – British Airways, Qantas and Singapore Airlines. All three operators need to pass (or better say avoid) several conflict areas. For example both Russian and Ukrainian airspace is being avoided, together with Iran, Lebanon and some other parts of the Middle East.
On the route between Heathrow and Singapore, British Airways either go south or north of Iran depending on which flight you are on. Qantas and Singapore Airlines always choose the northern route. The British Airways flight path south of Iran is a few hundred kilometers longer than the distances possible to achieve north of the country. No matter which of the routes we are talking about, all of them are at least 300 kilometers longer than the great circle distance, which is the shortest possible distance between the two airports.
